Rail chaos as Flying Scotsman halted by trespassers on tracks

The homecoming of the Flying Scotsman has been delayed after trespassers keen to get a closer glimpse of the iconic loco forced it to make an unplanned stop.

The engine's inaugural run from London to York this morning after a 10-year refit has been ground to a halt by trespassers.

Network Rail said it has had to "stop all trains" on the East Coast Mainline - including the world famous steam locomotive- "because of a huge number of trespassers" keen to get a look at it.

It said there were lots of safe vantage points for rail enthusiasts to photograph the Flying Scotsman and urged people not to "be tempted to trespass on the railway" on Twitter.

Virgin Trains East Coast tweeted: "Due to eager #FlyingScotsman photographers on the track near Peterborough, delays of 15 mins are expected. Don't be silly!"

It later added: "Delays caused by trespassers on the track near Peterborough have ended. Please please keep off the track!"

The loco was due to arrive into Doncaster at 11.54am.
