Pride of the Isle - who will you choose?

The second, even bigger celebration of the Isle’s most brave, selfless and deserving people, in memory of Epworth’s own child of courage, Alexander Strong, will take place on January 24, 2015.

It will be held in a marquee to seat 400 people, at an Isle venue yet to be announced. The Epworth Bells is lending its full support to the wonderful occasion that is organised by a committee headed by businesswoman Leesa Sharpe and Alexander’s mum, Maxine Strong.

Now is the time to nominate anyone you feel to be deserving of an award. This includes inspirational children or adults, and can be for a variety of reasons; in recognition of such qualities as courage, service to the community, or acts of selflessness.

The black tie event that was a huge success in January this year, will again feature top entertainment, from band The Torn, singer Kay Gunn, Star Wars’ stormtroopers and a top billing to be unveiled later in the year.

This year, attendees were treated to performances from John Parr, the Torn, Steve Womack, and an impromptu ‘Nine-to-Five’ rendition from Isle actress Sheridan Smith with her brother’s band The Torn, who journeyed north especially to be there.

January’s event raised a massive £3,620 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, that will again benefit from proceeds.

Demand for tickets has been very strong, and it was clear soon after the first Pride of the Isle, that a bigger venue would be necessary to follow on, said Leesa.

She added: “All the committee wanted to keep Pride of the Isle in the Isle, as it’s mostly people from this community and local businesses that have supported us.

The evening takes place close to the anniversary date that Alexander (Lexy) Strong lost his brave battle against the rare cancer, neuroblastoma.

Nine special and amazing people will receive awards in memory of the little seven-year old whose smile never dimmed despite his long and difficult ordeal.

Mrs Strong said after the first ceremony: “It’s fantastic that this has been for Alexander....to remember him and give awards to others. There are so many people working hard to fundraise for people and charities, or who are struggling with illness. The fact that people are so keen to attend the awards next year is an amazing tribute to Lex and to the hard work done for these awards behind the scenes.”
