An eye witness told the Bells/Advertiser: “While the men were digging they seem to have found some bones in the footings.

“They think there are two skeletons but they were only two feet deep and were not in caskets.

“I understand they are now being tested to see if they are human.”

A Humberside Police spokesman said today: “Enquiries undertaken suggest the bones to be of archeological origin and as such are to be handed to the appropriate agency.

“No further police action is expected to take place.”

A North Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “The bones are currently with the Police. If the landowner is willing to transfer the bones to the Museum, we would be happy to take them.

“This would mean that we could carry out some scientific work to try and establish more details about the bones including the age. At this stage, all we know is that the bones were found in a shallow grave about three-foot deep.”
