Sites in Armthorpe, Balby and Carcroft are now open, with others to follow.

Conisbrough and Hatfield reopened on Saturday, although Rossington household waste recycling centre remains closed, due to essential drainage works being carried out.

Waste bosses have also updated a list of banned items that should not be taken to any site, while significant restrictions are in place to protect staff and residents from any potential risk of Covid-19.

Council bosses are urging residents ‘in the strongest sense’ to stay away, unless their visit is essential.

Those with other waste which they have accumulated, for example from tidying the garage or shed in recent weeks, are asked to ‘hold onto it wherever possible’ until social distancing measures are relaxed.

Items which will not be accepted at any of Doncaster’s HWRCs until further notice include: electrical appliances of any size including fridges, freezers, cookers and ovens; clothes and fabrics; plasterboard; engine oil; vegetable oil; batteries; asbestos; gas bottles; plastic bottles; and hard plastics, such as plastic furniture and toys.

Restrictions in place mean there will be a limited number of vehicles on site at once and a queuing system in place.

Only one adult per vehicle – cars and small vans only; no trailers or large vans – is allowed on site and staff will not be able to assist in disposing of items.

Coun Chris McGuinness, Doncaster Council cabinet member for the environment said: “I’m sure many people will be relieved to see the HWRCs reopening following earlier health and safety issues related to Covid-19.

“This does not mean people should rush to them in an instant though.

“We understand the need to dispose of unhygienic waste, particularly during the current period of isolation where people are spending significantly more time at home.

“However, it is vital social distancing measures are in place and adhered to in order to protect staff and residents from the risk of Covid-19.”
