Ros Jones: 'I will stand as prospective candidate for Mayor of Doncaster in 2021'

Ros Jones said she will look to stand again for mayor for a third time.

Ms Jones told the Local Democracy Reporting Service will throw her name into the hat to be Labour’s candidate to become Doncaster Council's elected mayor.

She said serving the people of Doncaster was ‘humbling’ and was proud to represent the area she grew up as she looks to take on a third term in office.

Mayor Jones, was elected back in 2013 pipping independent incumbent and former English Democrat Peter Davies by less than 600 votes. She was re-elected with a huge majority of 19,000 in 2017.

Before being elected mayor, Ms Jones served as a councillor in the former Askern Spa ward for seven years.

Unlike the so-called 'strong leader' models on other councils, including those in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley, Doncaster Labour members and affiliated trade unions will vote on selecting their mayoral candidate in a ballot.

On the majority of other councils, councillors on the ruling party select a leader to run the council.

Mayor Jones said: "I am looking to put my name forward and it will go through the proper channels of party process - there could be others who put their name forward but it will go out to the membership and affiliated trade unions who decide who the candidate will be.

"We've been out twice to ask the people if they want an elected mayor and twice overwhelming they said they did.

"It's not just a privilege to serve the people of Doncaster - it's humbling as well that you're representing the area that you grew up in, live in and continue to live in.

"It's also an area where we know we are operating as a city and we are coming of age."
