Mexborough flyover and multi-storey car park considered for demolition as Doncaster Council confirm another delay to town masterplan

Plans are now in motion which could result in the demolition of a flyover bridge in Mexborough as the already delayed masterplan is set to be pushed back again.

Work on the masterplan got underway earlier this year but issues around the future of the town’s flyover and multi-storey car park means council bosses will set to alter the document.

But they said that further ‘potential opportunities’ have come to light in response to the changes.

Council bosses have all but confirmed that the flyover which takes traffic off the Greens Way bypass and into Mexborough town centre, will be bulldozed.

Documents show that the flyover will ‘need to be demolished’ due to its age, condition, cost of a replacement, and the ‘benefits of retaining the flyover versus improving other access to the town centre’.

The multi-storey car park is another asset under review as to its long term sustainability as an ageing property that is also a hotspot area for anti-social behaviour.

Options for its future are being considered and any proposals will ‘seek to support the masterplan delivery objectives’.

Back in May, the results of a structural survey suggested repairs could costs anything upwards of £300,000 to £5 million for a brand new bridge, according to Mexborough ward councillor Bev Chapman

Engineers told her an optimistic prediction is that the bridge will be closed for at least 12 months.

Mayor Ros Jones back in July said the poor state of the bridge could enable the council to look at demolishing the flyover, making Greens Way a single carriageway incorporating cycle-lanes, wider footpaths and trees. This would also link, enhance and complement with the forthcoming works around the bus station and railway station, she said.

Responding to the latest developments, Mexborough ward councillors Sean Gibbons, Bev Chapman and Andy Pickering, said: “We are in desperate need of investment for the whole of Mexborough.

“Revitalising our high street for our loyal businesses and hopefully attracting new businesses to our town are high on our priority list. This government is promising for the north, let’s try and hold them to that.

“This is a very exciting time for Mexborough, let’s hope we can all work together and make it a better place for us all to live and shop.”

Doncaster mayor Ros Jones, added: “The delay in finalising the Masterplan for Mexborough is far from ideal, but issues relating to the flyover and multi-story car park cannot be ignored.

“It makes sense to tackle these as part of the masterplan for Mexborough, this will provide a number of shovel ready schemes that can be put forward for funding when it becomes available.

“We are committed to supporting the regeneration of Mexborough town centre and have been preparing a masterplan to help deliver a strong vision for positive change in the town which can be used to help secure funding and coordinate regeneration activities.

“It is vital that the masterplan is updated to reflect these changed circumstances therefore putting us in a stronger position to access potential funding to deliver benefits for residents.”
