Fraudsters are trying to get business owners to hand over their financial details by sending emails that look as though they are sent by the government.

The message claims the receiver is owed a Covid-19 government business grant and the link takes them through to a legitimate-looking gov.uk website.

The receiver is then asked to enter financial details, with a claim that payments can take up to three working days.

A spokesman said: "We've been alerted to a scam email to businesses doing the rounds.

"This is fake. Direct.gov is not managing the grant process.

"The council will only ask for banking details via the secure form on our website."
