Passers by spotted a number of men scaling the clock tower at the junction of St Sepulchre Gate, Frenchgate and Baxtergate at around 5pm.

Officers were brought in to conduct a search of the area, but it is not known if they managed to track down the group, who were spotted clambering on rooftops in front of the clock, which has been a familiar Doncaster landmark for more than 100 years.

In recent years the clock has been mended and restored and now chimes once more, with Christmas carols sometimes being played from its tower during the festive season.
