Mary Humphries had been seriously ill in Doncaster Royal Infirmary, and was so poorly that she was put on an end of life care plan by the doctors at the hospital in Intake.

But she beat the odds to fight her way back to health and get back home – and to an emotional re-union with her husband of 72 years, David.

Bosses at the hospital have released a video of the moving moment Mary arrived back at the gate at family home in Stainforth, Doncaster, accompanied by a pair of ambulancemen, to be greated by a delighted David.

Neighbours applauded Mary’s arrival home as the ambulance crew members, wearing protective aprons, face masks, and blue surgical gloves, pushed her the short distance from the ambulance to the house. David greeted his wife, who was wearing a face mask for the journey from the hospital, with a big hug on the garden path.

Officials at the hospital who released the video this week with permission from the family, were moved by the scene.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “This video will probably make you cry. This is the moment Mary and David were reunited after beating all of the odds.

“Mary hasn't been well and sadly was placed on an end of life care plan at our hospital due to how poorly she has been - but she wasn't having any of it.

“Mary fought her way back to health and, ultimately, her husband and the love of her life, today, as she returned home. They have been together for 75 years and married for 72, and have six children and 69 grand and great grandchildren, the oldest being 48 and the youngest just eight days old.

“We want to thank David, Mary and family for sharing this moment with us. We also want to share our deep thanks with our SAW (Surgical Assessment Ward) and EOL (End of Life) teams who supported this amazing individual every step of the way.”
