Allan Jones, aged 74, director of the Sprotbrough Community Library, said: “Back in 2012 when we took over the library and saved it from being closed it was just a library.

“Now it’s a real asset to the community with classes and reading groups - we’re also a community hub.”

As well as the traditional features of a library there is also a computer suite and printing facilities available to members.

Maureen O'Brien, aged 62, from Cusworth, works at the library, she said: “We have a great selection of books and if we don’t have what you want we can order it in.

Reading is really making a comeback - we’re seeing the numbers of people borrowing books on the rise again.

“I think that’s because we’re wonderful - our volunteer team offers so much to the public.”

The library also has online facilities as well which include e-books and music.

The staff and volunteers at the library are looking forward to the new library opening in the town centre later this year.

Allan said: “I hope that it regenerates an interest in books and people will come and see that we are a welcoming place.”

It’s free to become a member of the library - you can walk in and sign up on the spot as long as you bring some ID.
