It said: “He was a true gentleman and a very loving family man. It’s been over 20 years since he last worked in the shop and we still get asked “how’s Bernard” almost daily.

“He enjoyed 91 fun filled years and my god were we all privileged to know him!”

A spokesman for Doncaster Market said: “Our thoughts are with the whole family during this time. Bernard Wilkinson, a true market legend!”

An obituary added: “Bernard will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends.”
