Tributes after death of Doncaster WW2 veteran and maternity nurse

Tributes have been paid following the death of a Doncaster World War Two veteran who also served as a nurse.

Winifred Taylor, known as Mary, served as a corporal with the ATS during the conflict and died earlier this month in Great Yarmouth at the age of 98.

Mrs Taylor, formerly of Roman Terrace, Mexborough and Moor Road, Wath, died on June 19.

The widow of Reg, an obituary said she ‘proudly served as a corporal in the ATS during the Second World War before returning to work in Woolworths in Mexborough. She later served as a nursing auxilliary for many years at the Montagu Hospital maternity ward which brought he great pleasure.”

It added: “She had a wonderful and full life and was much loved by all who knew her.”

A private family funeral will be held on July 3 with a memorial event later in the year when coronavirus restrictions are lifted.
