Friday, May 8 marks the 75th anniversary of VE day.

Dennis Monroe is hosting a socially distanced street party to celebrate the event - he will be live streaming the party on Facebook so that anyone can join.

He said: “I will be playing wartime songs through my speakers in the garden so that everyone can have a little bit of joy this Friday.

“We have all been sticking to the rules and staying inside due to Covid-19 and we could use something like this to lift spirits.”

Dennis and his neighbours who live on Bosworth Road in Adwick Le Street will be fully committing to the war time theme by dressing up in costumes whilst they sit out in their gardens.

He said: “My kids are so excited to dress up.

“My girls are wearing 1930’s school uniforms and the lads have evacuee outfits with gas masks.

“They keep asking me how many sleeps until the party because they’re looking forward to it so much.”

There will be a strict two-meter social distance rule between any people taking part in person.

Dennis is encouraging people to make a picnic and have a few drinks during the two-hour street party.

He also hopes that his neighbours will decorate the fronts of their houses with bunting and wear red white and blue themselves.

He will also be playing 60’s music after wartime music to add to the sense of nostalgia.

Dennis has been getting his speakers out every Thursday during the clap for carers and playing songs such as ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ and ‘We Will Meet Again.’

“The NHS is giving us 100 percent of themselves at the moment,” Dennis continued.

“They’re going out into dangerous circumstances to support us and risking their lives.

“We are so grateful for them and want to show them that we do care.”
