Established in 1925 the choir originally came together to raise money to buy shoes for poor children in the town.

The group has at times had up to 50 members but is currently struggling with just 18 - they are asking anybody who enjoys singing to consider joining their group - especially anyone who is a tenor.

Stanley Turnball, aged 90, retired Inspector from Scawsby has been part of the choir for 50 years.

He said: “The time spent with the choir has been a privilege because of the enjoyment you get from being a member.

“Every time a new member joins I say to them ‘welcome to the family, you won’t leave once you join’ and it’s a true fact.

“The only reason people leave is due to ill health, sickness or bereavement.”

You don’t have to be a member of the forces to join the choir - the only requirement is that you enjoy singing.

Stanley said: “To lose it would be a sad occasion - the continuation of this choir is indeed necessary because it’s so enjoyable you come here happy and leave twice as happy because you’ve had such a lovely time.”

The group meets every Monday evening at the minster house behind St George’s Minster at 7 - 8.30pm.

Malc Briggs, aged 74, retired Detective Constable from Dearne Valley, said: “There’s an enjoyment to be had singing in the choir - there is comradery and health benefits.

“It’s just so pleasant - we’re effectively a family of singers.”

The group sings a range of songs from traditional hymns to Vera Lynn and even a bit of Elvis Presley.

Darren Williams, the Musical Director of the group, said: “Originally the choir was for police officers but these days we take anybody with an interest in singing.

“Choirs, in general, are really important at the moment, there are lots of studies out there about the positive side effects of music - especially for people’s mental health.”
