The big-screen version of the hit West End musical features the Hollywood star as drag queen Loco Chanelle, who serves as a mentor the film’s title character, Jamie New, played by Max Harwood.

The play debuted in the West End in 2017, based on the BBC Three documentary, Jamie: Drag Queen At 16, a teenager who wanted to attend his school prom in drag.

The production received critical acclaim, including nominations for Best New Musical, Best Actor In A Musical and Outstanding Achievement In Music at the Oliviers.

The movie also stars Sarah Lancashire and Sharon Horgan, who will play teacher Miss Hedge and Jamie’s mum, Margaret New, respectively.

Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati is also among the cast.

The film was shot at a number of locations across Sheffield last year and there have been calls for the film to be given its premiere in the city.

The movie’s release may be impacted by the coronavirus crisis, however.
