The discount retailer’s store at Mexborough Market Hall is the latest store to sell the new lines, ranging from frozen pizzas to cheeseburgers.

“Project Ice” was launched in March to bring chilled and frozen food to a further 60 stores after customers gave a glowing reception to trials in seven pilot stores.

The new lines were introduced to 20 stores, plus a further 10 with chilled only, before the programme was put on hold so Poundland could focus on keeping the majority of its stores open to serve their local communities during lockdown.

Work on revamping the remaining stores in the programme has resumed, starting with Mexborough going live this morning, and will accelerate over summer.

All the work has been carried out in line with official guidance on safe working during the coronavirus outbreak and the revamped stores will provide the same robust standards of hygiene that apply across all Poundland stores to protect customers and colleagues.

At stores that have been converted, hot sellers have included top chilled food brands such as Ginsters, Cathedral City, Lurpak, Sutherland deep fill sandwiches and Rustlers cheeseburgers. Customers have been snapping up frozen products including Bernard Matthews chicken breast and Birds Eye cod fillets, plus brands such as Aunt Bessie’s, McCain and Young’s.

The ranges have been developed in partnership with Fultons Foods, a leading regional frozen food specialist with 90 stores across the North of England.
