Bright sparks at a Doncaster shopping centre can power up their electric cars - for no charge.

For Lakeside Village has introduced a new electric car port, where shoppers can plug in and recharge their vehicle for free.

The port, located by the store, marks the latest move in the outlet village’s mission to become more environmentally friendly.

Cheryl Sadler, centre manager, said: “Caring for both our customers and the environment is very important to us here at Lakeside Village, so it made perfect sense to introduce an electric car charging facility on site.

“By providing the facility for free we hope to encourage more people in the area to consider an electric vehicle and, in turn, help to play a part in making South Yorkshire a greener place.”

Mark Timms, a 29-year-old accountant and electric car owner from Askern in Doncaster, was the first to use the charger.

Mark, said: “I’ve been an electric car owner for almost a year now. I’m an accountant and purchased my vehicle after doing the sums and seeing that economically, it makes great sense. The fact that it’s also very eco-friendly is the icing on the cake.

“It’s great to see the team at Lakeside Village have introduced this new charger. I’ll be using the point often and I’m sure it’s be a big draw for other electric car drivers who are passing on the A1 and M18.”

The electric car port forms part of Lakeside Village’s ongoing green policy, which has seen the outlet village introduce initiatives such as recycling all stores’ coat hangers, clothes, cardboard, glass and ceramics, and switching all of the lights in its 930-space car park to LEDs in a bid to use less power.
