Four-legged staff members have long been part of the South Yorkshire Police force, with dogs recruited from independent breeders, trainers and other forces.

The dogs, if not acquired as puppies, are assessed for suitability between six months and two years old, and after passing initial training are licensed every 12 months to meet NPCC standards of safety, efficiency and control. Here are 12 photos of South Yorkshire Police’s cutest recruits.
