Another replied: “Yes! I was walking the dog at the back of St Chads. Jumped out my skin!”

One resident said that it could be heard on Meadow Cross while another heard it on Stone Cross, believing it was a firework.

Some said they saw ‘shockwaves’ coming up the River Don.

One man joked that the noise came after his ‘wife fell out of bed’.

He later posted: “I am writing this from the garage. I have been told I am spending the night there.”
