After watching the news with his two parents who work in Tesco, five-year-old Harley Bate asked them if he could do anything to help the situation.

“He’s such a caring little boy, we are over the moon and so proud of him,” said his father, Dean Bate, from Balby.

“Our next-door neighbour is a nurse and he asked if we could get her flowers for doing her job and he always claps as loud as he can on Thursday nights.

“He watches a lot of news and is clued up about what is going on and decided that he wanted to do something to help - he asked us if we could help get more masks to the doctors he saw on the TV.”

Dean set up a GoFundMe which has so far raised £190 and they hope to raise a total of £1,000 or more.

With that money, they will buy masks, hand sanitizer and fabric mask adjusters which he will then give to his neighbour who can distribute them to staff who may be in need at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Dean said: “I just think it’s amazing that he wants to help - this is what you bring kids up for.

“We really couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Like many other children, Harley has been drawing rainbows and putting them up in the windows of his home to help bring cheer to his neighbourhood.

“Everyone should be doing their bit to help,” Dean continued.

“You don’t know when you might be affected by it and need those medical professionals to be fully protected with PPE so they can care for you.
