Community spirits on a Doncaster street are soaring thanks to a twice-weekly game of “street bingo” which is played by all the residents.

People on Mayfield Cresent, Askern, began the fun on the second day of lockdown, and wear a variety of fancy dress costumes, dressing up skeletons, nuns, dinosaurs, and even a miniature Mr T from The A-Team.

Tables and chairs are carried out of houses and people enjoy the fine weather with a glass or two of something refreshing.

Resident Jemma Guy said: “The Hartgroves who set the game up call numbers over speaker phone and Summer is our fabulous bingo caller.

“We have lots of laughs!

“All the street of Mayfield Cresent comes out and enjoys the twice a week event, including some of our elderly neighbors who love it.

“We have music. We have worn Easter bonnets, fancy dress and pyjamas.”

Despite the jollity, the bingo-players are careful not to break social distancing rules.

“Lenny a young boy on the street sends his remote control car up and down the street to collect and give out winnings,” said Jemma.

“Everything is safe – we all sit at our driveways two meters apart and everything is sprayed with Dettol. We have no contact at all.

“We have also raised money for the NHS.

“It is something that keeps us going and something to look forward too. The street has definitely come together and would do anything for each other.”
