As a self-confessed book enthusiast and hoarder, I have had a few friends and acquaintances reach out for book recommendations or even just tips on how to start reading if they’ve never had the urge to pick up a book before.

With all of us suddenly having a lot more free time and looking for hobbies and outlets I’m not surprised that our attention is turning to literature as a source of entertainment.

But it can be a little overwhelming to non-book people who don't know where to begin so I thought I would share some tips with you all.

First of all, you need to figure out what genre you are most likely to enjoy - whether it be sci-fi, fantasy or action-packed drama.

There is a simple way to deduce where you fit in on the genre scale and that is to think about what type of TV and films you enjoy.

If you love cheesy romance films then there is a good chance that you will have fun with chick lit and if horror is your thing then Stephen King has hundreds of novels waiting for you.

Once you’ve determined your genre the next step is purchasing the book which in pre-pandemic times would be as easy as walking into your local bookshop but due to Covid-19, the internet is really your only option.

Some book retailers are still operational such as Waterstones who are still delivering at a delayed rate but if you want a book fast then your best option is to either invest in a Kindle or use audiobooks.

Another tip I have for you is to go slow, don’t overwhelm yourself trying to finish books as fast as possible.

And lastly please don’t pick up any post-apocalyptic literature during this time! It’s not good for your mental health.
