Funeral details announced for 'absolute legend' Doncaster PE teacher

The funeral details for a popular former Doncaster PE teacher dubbed an ‘absolute legend’ have been announced.

Barry Winstanley whose death was announced last week, spent much of his career at Hungerhill School, teaching thousands of pupils during his stint at the Edenthorpe school which spanned more than three decades.

Former colleagues and pupils rushed to pay tribute to Mr Winstanley, who became popular among students for his wisecracking manner, practical jokes and a firm but fair approach in the classroom.

He was also well known for re-enacting the classic football scene from 1960s movie Kes during school soccer matches.

His cremation service will take place at Rose Hill Crematorium from 9.20am on Friday.

Under the current coronavirus restrictions, up to 50 mourners will be allowed to pay their respects to Mr Winstanley, a keen Rotherham United fan who remaning living in Edenthorpe following his retirement from the school in the 1990s.
