Former Sheffield Lord Mayor Magid named as City of Sanctuary co-chair

City of Sanctuary Sheffield, which gives support to refugees and asylum seekers in the city, said the appointment will help fulfill their vision of making Sheffield a welcoming city for people seeking sanctuary.
Magid said: “I’m truly honoured to be taking on this role at such a crucial time. City of Sanctuary Sheffield is an exceptional charity that plays an integral role in supporting all those that are seeking refuge.

Magid first came to Sheffield with his mother and siblings as refugees from Somalia in 1994.
The 31-year-old had served as the Lord Mayor of Sheffield from May 2018 to May 2019, attracting massive media attention as he was the first ethnic-Somali, the youngest ever and the first Green Party councillor to hold the role.
He currently heads up a new pan-European organisation that is dedicated to racial justice and climate justice.
