Doncaster teenager takes to the sky after being awarded his pilot wings

Ryan Wood, a student in year 10 at De Warenne Academy, completed his classification training with 103 Doncaster Squadron recently, taking to the skies for his first flight.

Ryan, aged just 14, will now continue to complete flights over the next two years as part of his cadet training, and is aiming to get his first licence by the age of 16.

He has also completed training in first aid, radio communications, flight navigation, team leadership, and First Class Cadet Awards.

Officer Commanding 103 Doncaster Squadron, Flight Lieutenant RAFAC Steve Lambert, said: “Ryan is progressing well, it’s always great to see cadets wanting to take part in everything we throw at them. I can see him carrying on his time with the RAFAC and only gaining more confidence in everything he does.”

Ryan is also the youngest serving member of the Balby-based branch of the Royal British Legion and has been asked to carry the Union Flag during the upcoming Conisbrough Remembrance Day parade. He will commence his training for this in the coming weeks and will be part of a team leading the veterans.

De Warenne Academy principal, Anna Rooney, added: “Ryan deserves recognition for the huge contribution he makes in serving his local community, his commitment to enhancing his own education and the drive and determination he is showing in achieving his ultimate goal of becoming a pilot in the RAF.”
