Despite only learning to ride his bike last week, Henry Irvine has been cycling nonstop for the last five days.

“He has been watching Colonel Tom on the news every morning and he’s been excited to see how much money he has raised,” said Kelly- Louise Smith, Henry’s mother.

“He wanted to do something just like him and we decided together that riding his bike would be a good option.

“We’re so proud of him for doing this and for being so passionate about it.”

Captain Tom Moore has raised over 30 million pounds for the NHS and was given the honorary title of Colonel earlier this week in recognition of his achievements.

Henry has cycled 19.2 miles in the last five days, mostly down the Trans Pennine Trail near where he lives in Cusworth.

Kelly said: “He has been loving it, he’s been bitten by the cycling bug and we can’t get him off his bike.

“Which is amazing because it took ages for him to get the confidence up to ride it without the stabilisers on.”

Kelly says that Henry has a good grasp of what’s going on in the world at the moment and has been hit hardest by not being able to see his grandmother who is a key worker in a supermarket.

“We haven’t been able to see her for six weeks now and he usually sees her every day,” she continued.

“She’s come to the window and dropped off food parcels but it’s still hard for him.”

Henry is a Year 1 pupil at Hooton Pagnell Primary School and his mother described him as a clever and sensible boy.

Kelly said: “I’m incredibly grateful for what the NHS is doing at the moment.

“I’m pregnant so I have had to go to the hospital for midwife appointments and they have been brilliant.”
