Doncaster charity say domestic abuse has risen during lockdown

A Doncaster business has pledged to help charity who is safeguarding vulnerable people who have suffered from domestic violence throughout the pandemic.

Phoenix WoMens Aid is a charity that supports Women, Men, and Children who are victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse, by providing safe accommodation on both a long term and short term basis.

Since the charity opened their three refuges (December 2019, April 2020 and June 2020) they have received 35 referrals (18 women and 17 men) with an associated 24 children.

“The Managing Director of Phoenix WoMens Aid, Cassidy McCarthy, said: “Phoenix WoMen’s Aid provides emergency refuge accommodation and community-based support for women, men and their children who are living with, or fleeing from, domestic violence and abuse.

“Our refuge services are life-saving and the significant contribution towards our rent bill made by MechFS further supports the continuation of this vital service”.

With 15 spaces in total, the refuges can accommodate six families and nine single people and is one of the first domestic abuse charities to offer male-only refuge in the area.

Paul Sutherland, CEO of MechFS, said: “The Coronavirus pandemic has been extremely challenging for everyone, and never has there been a more essential time for us to support the work of this crucial charity.

In addition, MechFS introduced Phoenix WoMens Aid to one of their sub-contractors, Aegis Fire and Security, who have kindly donated and installed a fire alarm system.
