Doncaster artist organises 65 paintings to be donated to hospital

The last six months have been hard for many but in particular those who work in the medical profession.

This is why Doncaster artist Chinwe Russell decided to do something to cheer up the staff members at the Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI).

Chinwe said: “My sister works in the NHS and that prompted me to paint a three canvas piece earlier this year.

“I was worried for her well being and what she was going through on the frontline back in March.”

Chinwe named her art piece “NHS Rocks” its purpose was to show her gratitude towards everything doctors and nurses were doing in the early stages of the pandemic.

After she finished her painting she knew she wanted to donate it to somewhere it would make a difference so she thought about DRI.

But through her connections in the art world she wanted to get more artists to donate pieces to go alongside hers – and ended up with 65 pieces of art that

now hang on walls inside DRI.

“We wanted to put them somewhere that a lot of people could see them,” she said.

“They gave us the busiest corridor to hang them up on so that the most patients and staff would pass them daily.”

Most pieces have been created by Doncaster artists but some have come from Leeds and Sheffield.

Artists include Terry Chipp, Kerry Dickenson, Dr Nishtha Patel , Janet Wallace, David Williams, Martin Pick, Bob Ng, Monica Mills, Sallie Ashe, Tracey Moore and several others.

It has taken Chinwe almost four months to complete this project due to the Covid-19 chaos disrupting the medical field.

“It’s been a huge success and we have already had great feedback from the staff who work there,” Chinwe said.

“We hope to do the same thing for the Bassetlaw hospital next and would love for any artists who want to partake to get in touch about donating their art.”
