Don Your Way: Even the snowmen in Doncaster are wearing coronavirus masks!

It’s almost like it never existed now bearing in mind the weather events of Doncaster in the past week, but you may recall this time last week our town was under a blanket of snow.

Already going stir crazy at home under the latest Government lockdown ‘stay at home’ order, the sight of the white stuff gently falling past the window brought out the big kids in me and my partner Giulia.

And so it was that we made the most of our daily dose of exercise by heading out into the crisp air, reverting back to childhood to indulge in chucking snowballs at each other and yes, to build a snowman.

Now, when snow falls, we're never ready for it. Drivers and buses can’t cope and invariably, the country grinds to a halt under the slightest dusting of snow.

It also means sledges being hurriedly bought or dusted down from the back of the shed and frantic scrabbling around looking for a ‘build a snowman’ kit.

Household objects are thrown into use as eyes, mouths and buttons, while old scarves and hats get dragged out of the back of the wardrobe.

Naturally, we didn’t have a carrot in the house, not even a manky one forgotten about in the darkest corners of the fridge and there was nothing to fashion a mouth either, so what to do?

Well, the answer was obvious. Do what every good fashionable snowman of 2021 should be wearing of course – and that was to plaster our snowy creation with a facemask.

As people walked past our colourful creation, they were giggling, laughing out loud and even stopping to take photos of our masked up buddy.

Browsing through Facebook later, its clear to see plenty of other people had had the same idea.

No doubt in years to come, curious generations will want to know the story behind the mask and we’ll all launch into our coronavirus stories.

Even though it was freezing outside, it warmed our hearts to see people bursting out laughing at spotting the mask.

And let’s face it, everyone needs a smile in these difficult times. Even the snowman probably had one under his mask.
