Neil Smith, 59, was driving along Barnsley Road with his wife Kim at around 10am on August 28, when a lorry pulled out of a junction near to Marr Lodge and crashed into the driver’s side door of their car.

Firefighters worked for over an hour to cut Neil from the wreckage while Kim, who was able to free herself, watched on.

Kim, 62, said: “We were going to pick my son and two-year-old grandson up and take them out for lunch because my husband has been shielding for six months.

"After the crash, I managed to get out then my adrenaline kicked in and I was trying to get the door of the car open as Neil was trapped.

"My husband has terminal kidney cancer and kidney failure. He’s been fighting for his life for the last six years and I just thought ‘Jesus he’s been fighting this for six years, with medication and everything and to be killed like this’ – that’s what traumatised me, that he could be gone just like that.

"I just think we’ve had a lucky escape.”

In the time before the emergency services arrived, a young motorbike rider with the registration PK20 FTV assisted the couple and offered them words of reassurance.

The Smith’s are now appealing for help to find this man, who they described as a ‘hero’.

Kim said: “This young lad saw me screaming and trying to get the door open and he got off his motorbike, he was obviously a learner as he had 'L’ plates and couldn’t have been any older than 25.

"He came over and calmed me down and told me to get into the back seat. He said ‘I’m a first aider let me sit with Neil’ and talked to him the whole time.

"I’ve got to thank that guy, without him I would have freaked out.”
