People sign up to improve their mental health

North Lincolnshire people are signing up to improve their mental wellbeing in the New Year according to the region’s first Recovery College.

The Options Recovery College, run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), is reporting that courses for its spring term, which starts in January, are already nearly fully booked with only a few spaces available – a month before they are due to start.

From its base at Sandfield House on Ashby High Street, the college runs free educational courses that support people in managing everyday mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, low mood, low self-confidence and sleep problems, as well as offering support in improving overall mental and physical health.

Options Recovery College Manager Sue Watson said: “We’ve had huge interest from local employers for their staff, and we’re finding that people who attended courses in our first term are now recommending us to their friends and families.

“Our open day on 5 December also proved popular, but we regularly get people popping in for a prospectus after seeing our outdoor banner when they’re out shopping in Ashby.”

To cope with the high levels of interest, the college has added three new taster sessions to help people find out if a course is suitable for them.

They are also introducing two new courses to the prospectus this term, coping with distress and mindfulness, which is designed to help people who spend a lot of time worrying about the future, or dwelling on past events. Practical advice that could appeal to many of us as we head into the New Year.

Sue added: “All our courses offer a welcoming environment with small friendly groups. They’re aimed at supporting people to cope with everyday mental health challenges and helping them to achieve the things they want in life.”

There are still a few spaces available for the new term, which starts on 13 January 2015. All courses are free and available to anyone in North Lincolnshire and there are no entry requirements to enrol.
