Patter of tiny dancing feet at big family rave

So you're a parent of young children but you look back fondly to the days when you went out clubbing and wish there was a way to go now.

Maybe somewhere you could take your kids, who’ve inherited your love of dance music?

Now there’s a family rave you can all go to.

Verena Scrimshire is part of the crew at Big Fish Little Fish, who already run events around the country and are bringing their first family-friendly rave to Sheffield next month.

She said: “It’s incredibly popular, chiming with parents like myself who want to go clubbing with their kids. They love the music and want to share it.”

Verena said: “I used to work in Sheffield and moved away. I started doing them in Nottingham, where I live, and we’ve been selling out every one.

“I thought I’d look at Sheffield and see what’s happening there. The Plug club is a great size for us.”

The DJ at the first event at Plug is Chris Welch, who co-presents the Sunday show Sounds Like This on radio station Sheffield Live.

He’s playing tunes from the past 20 years. Verena promises “plenty of bouncing around”.

She said the event are “for families and their kids, mainly from 0 to eight years, and older kids can come along.

“The youngest I’ve seen was a two-week-old newborn with their parents. I was in awe, to be honest, knowing what state you’re in at that point.

“We also get grandparents coming along. It’s for everyone to come and enjoy.”

Glitter cannons go off on the dancefloor and there’s also bubbles. Everyone gets glow sticks to wave and wear.

There’s a licensed bar and lots of activities for the children, including a long craft table and a giant colouring mural.

A chillout area for babies has mats and a ball pool.

The raves all have a theme and everyone is encouraged to dress up. The Plug event theme is intergalactic planetary, so Verena expects to see plenty of astronauts and aliens.

The music level is strictly controlled so that it doesn’t hurt little ears.

Her own children, aged two and four, have a great time. “My youngest absolutely adores it, I can’t get him off the dancefloor.

“The older one loves all the activities and trying out his moves on the dancefloor. One will definitely be the robot!”

She added: “Sheffield has a great history of music and clubbing and we know parents with young kids are absolutely desperate to go out dancing.”

The launch event at Plug is on July 9 from 2pm to 4.30pm and it’s set to be a regular event after that. Bookings: Big Fish Little Fish Events
