Our clean sweep is fit for a Queen
The Clean for The Queen campaign achieved its aim by sprucing up many of the grotspots across Doncaster in time for the monarch's 90th birthday.
Campaign director Adrian Evans had put out a call for help from individuals, groups, schools, companies, sports teams – anyone keen to pick up litter in their local communities.
The aim was to attract one million people nationally during the clean-up weekend on March 4, 5 and 6, in time for the birthday celebrations on April 21.
Many groups responded and supported the scheme with a host of individuals, major businesses, charities, local authorities and schools taking part.
Catherine Watson and her 85-year-old husband Stuart, of Hatfield, took part in a litter-pick on Sunday.
The couple filled four large bags of litter from the bridle path next to the Ash Hill Academy playing field.
Catherine said: “There is still a large amount of litter left, bottles, cans and food cartons on the school side of the path which we could not collect.”
Litter pickers were out in force in Tickhill and were praised by organiser and participant Nigel Cannings.
He said: “A big thank you to those who turned up for our community ‘Clean For The Queen’ litter pick along Bawtry Road and Paper Mill Lane.
“Then it was all up to the Parish Room for refreshments and scones courtesy of a donation via Blakemore Foundation.”
Litter pickers across Mexborough were also out in force.
Gail Taylor, community leader at Mexborough Academy, brought around 30 pupils to help with a clean-up around the school in areas including Bridleway, Barbers Path, green-space off Wildene Drive, Willow Drive, Maple Road flats footpaths, lane at side of old Highwoods pub leading to Old Farm Court and elsewhere in the area.
Participants from Comelybank Drive, near Pastures Road, also helped.
Adrian Evans said: “Our ambition was to create a community inspired, grass-roots mass action event – one that will become a recurring annual initiative.
“We feel that marking The Queen’s 90th birthday with the inaugural clean-up was a wonderful way to kick-start it to life.”
