Summer is here and we’re finally enjoying some sunshine, in between the clouds and rain! As we’re over half way through the year, I’ve taken time to reflect back on all the amazing things which have happened across Doncaster already this year.

The main highlight is how we’re spending money in the town on vital services We understand how busy and stretched our Macmillan services are, so we’ve decided to help by establishing some new Macmillan Information and Support Worker roles based at the Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Macmillan will be investing over £89,000 to fund two of these new roles at the Macmillan Information and Support service. I had the pleasure of meeting Alex Green, a Macmillan Information and Support Worker, who is based at the Macmillan Centre in the outpatients department of the hospital. Alex explains:

“My role is to help people make sense of their cancer diagnosis and the impact it will have on their life.

“Our role allows us to support people with access to things like financial, emotional and psychological support.

“No two people are the same, and support can range from practical things like a blue badge for parking or a toilet card, through to access to counselling or support groups.

“I’m passionate about making sure people get the right support they need, at the time they need it, even if that’s just a listening ear.”

“We don’t want people in Doncaster to feel lost during their cancer care, so I’m delighted we’re able to fund roles like Alex’s. I’m delighted to say the Information and Support Service is proving to be an invaluable addition to the support offered for people affected by cancer in the town.

On average staff at the Macmillan pod are speaking to over 300 people each month, supporting them on a wide range of issues from managing symptoms, side effects of cancer treatment, financial advice and bereavement.

The new service provides a friendly, private environment for patients, carers and family members affected by cancer, to access appropriate information and support. The service is fully funded by Macmillan and we can’t do it without you.

People who live in Doncaster can call the service directly for support and advice on 01302 796 853. If you’d like to do any fundraising or volunteering, call Amy on 07710 307050.
