Three tricky parts to pleasant six-mile Doncaster ramble

There are three parts of this local walk, starting in New Rossington, which might not suit everyone.

The first two occur early and involve a 400-metre stretch crossing private land, following by a climb up and over the old spoil heap, writes Peter Rowsell, of Doncaster Ramblers.

The third is on the final leg where the path is waterlogged for a few metres, ankle deep.

Otherwise it’s an easy ramble of just less than six miles on flat terrain.

Start at the junction of Grange Lane and Allenby Crescent and head down Grange Lane West, passing The White Rose and continue until reaching the cemetery.

1. I have opted to take the route right along a wide track to the left of a no entry sign – this is not an official right of way, but looks well used.

Alternatively there is a diversion turning left just past the cemetery, then left again then right followed by a second right to eventually reach the footbridge at number three.

2. From the cemetery to the footbridge is just more than half a mile, with a 90-feet climb.

Once on top, follow path/tracks right along the top. The surface can be uneven so take care.

Keep an eye open for footbridge below, close to Amazon security fence.

Once you see the bridge make your way down.

3. Continue along this well-defined track for just more than half a mile, then turn sharp left.

After a few metres, where the track heads left, turn right along a narrow grassy trail and across fields to reach Wellingley Lane.

Turn left and follow road as it swings right and continue for 500m to reach Four Lane Ends

4. Turn left and follow Stancil Lane for just more than a mile to reach Stancil Farm.

Keeping the building to your left, follow the track on the right for 170m then cross stile on your left.

Head across field to a second stile in the far hedge.

Continue in the same general direction across arable fields for 400m then at wood edge turn right to cross bridge on left.

5. It is at this point you encounter the waterlogged path. There is no way around, so be prepared to take three or four steps in ankle deep water.

Continue across scrubland for 400m to reach a field corner.

6. The designated footpath should head diagonally across the field, but instead we turn half right to follow field edge, then left for half a mile to reach the outskirts of Rossington.

7. Turn right onto Radburn Road, left onto Gattison Lane, cross Allenby Crescent to join Central Drive and after quarter of a mile turn right onto Grange Road.
