We have walked in and around Tickhill several times over the years, as the area has a fascinating history, writes Peter Rowsell, of Doncaster Ramblers.

There are also a number of footpaths to explore and I’m sure many will know this one.

On the other hand, if you’re are new to the area, or new walking this is a good one to try.

It is a five-and-a-half-mile route.

1. Start at the Buttercross at the centre of the village. Facing the row of shops – Taylor’s etc – head left down the street passing the narrow St Mary’s Gate then turn left into Bride Church Lane and follow this left into Church lane passing St Mary’s Church to emerge on We st Gate A60. Cross and turn right then left to enter Dam Road.

2. As the road bends left, to cross stream and continue down footpath to reach Lindrick Lane. Cross and continue south. After 2 70 metres the path forks, take the left closest to the stream and follow this as it bends left. After quarter of a mile there is a crossing of paths, take the one opposite crossing footbridge then continue for another 270m turning left following the footpath north for 340m before turning right, then left.

3. The track now runs alongside the A1(M) for half a mile, to reach the A631 Sunderland Street . Turn right under bridge, then left along Papermill Lane, then after 150m take footpath on

right and follow this for 1200m to reach Sheepwash Lane. Here there is a divergence of paths, take the left which slowly swings left following the left bank of the river. After 780m the footpath turns left then right to follow the edge of Tickhill Low Common Wood to reach a T junction of paths.

4. Turn left, then after 500m turn right and follow the path left turning right to cross over them A1(M) again.

5. Immediately after crossing, take a well-hidden footpath on left down side of motorway then turn right through housing crossing Pasture Way, shortly after turning left, then right onto The Oval. Walk down to the T Junction with Alderson Drive and continue on the footpath ahead to reach the playing fields.

6. Head for the exit in the opposite left hand corner, and follow the alley out onto Sunderland Street. Turn right to reach the Butter Cross.
