No captain likes to see a team go down when he's at the helm, as was the case in last season's ill-fated Championship campaign.

Not that Kesik himself could have done much more and he was one of the relegated club’s most consistent performers.

He was one of the first names on coach Gary Thornton’s list when it came to putting a squad together for 2016.

And the former Sheffield Eagles man, who originally arrived at the Keepmoat Stadium as part of the deal which took Peter Green to the Steel City, showed his loyalty when agreeing a new contract.

“I was sorry to see some of the players leave at the end of last season because I’d played with them for a number of seasons,” he said.

“With only seven other players still here from last year it felt like the first day at school at the first pre-season session because I hardly knew anybody.

“But we’ve all bonded well over the last few months and there is a good team spirit in the camp and we are hoping to give the supporters something to cheer this season.

“We know we've still got some work to do but I think the club have put together a decent squad and hopefully, barring a glut of injuries, we’ll be strong enough to win promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt. That’s the plan.”
