North Lincolnshire tattooists receive highest hygiene rating

A new scheme to improve standards of tattooists has already seen four premises in North Lincolnshire achieve the highest rating – level four.

The Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme (THRS) is a voluntary scheme aimed at improving standards of tattooists and allowing the public to choose a tattooist that meets high standards of hygiene.

There are 15 tattooists registered with the North Lincolnshire Council’s licensing department. The council is encouraging others to join the scheme and has written to them informing them about the scheme and explaining how they can register.

The scheme aims to:

Inform the public about the hygiene standards in the premises at the time of the most recent inspection

Drive up standards and encourage adoption of best practice across the industry

Reduce the risk of incidents of infection and of transition of infectious diseases from tattooing procedures

Promote the use of reputable tattooists

The scheme is voluntary – participating premises will be allocated a rating, from one to four, following an inspection. That rating can be displayed in the premises, similar to the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Premises will be rated under four categories:

1. Needs improvement

2. Satisfactory

3. Good

4. Very good

The four who chieved the top level are Andrew Brader – Cat with the Tat, 50 Wrawby Street, Brigg; Ian Petrie – Ian Petrie Tattoo Studio, 6 Elwes Street, Brigg; Andrew Grierson - Sinful Ink, 188 East Common Lane, Scunthorpe; Pam Green – ABH Tattooing, 161 High Street, Scunthorpe.

Councillor Neil Poole, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire council, said: “This is a great way to advertise your business – by displaying in your window that you are a top rated tattooist. This in turn will attract more customers, so it is great for the business and the customers who can rest assured that they are getting a top quality service from a reputable and highly praised tattooist.

“It is free and straightforward to register, just download the form on our website and we’ll do the rest.

“We want to ensure that the public are getting the level of service they deserve when visiting a tattoo parlour and for businesses to reap the benefits.”
