There was no official service at the War Memorial in Bennetthorpe as usual this morning because of the Covid-19 lockdown currently in place in England, but some socially distanced residents and veterans turned up to pay tribute to the town’s fallen.

Doncaster Council pulled the plug on its annual service and parade, but said that residents would still be able to attend the war memorial individually, as long as they maintained social distancing and followed rules.

A number of wreaths have been laid, with the town’s Civic Mayor Coun Paul Wray placing poppies at the foot of the memorial on behalf of the town.

Last night, Doncaster Police also laid wreaths on behalf of South Yorkshire Police.

The Royal British Legion urged people to watch the service in London on television or hold a two minute silence on their doorsteps.
