Volunteers from a new food bank will be collecting at a Doncaster town centre supermarket later this week.
Doncaster foodbank, based at Christ Church on Thorne Road, is due to launch in September.
On Friday and Saturday a team of up to 40 volunteers will be at Tesco in Church View from 9am to 4pm asking shoppers to donate non-perishable food to get the bank off to a good start.
Mark Snelson, manager of Doncaster foodbank, said: “The current economoc climate means more and more people are struggling to put food on the table, so we really need local people to give what they can to help.
“Money troubles as a result of job losses, rising food and energy prices and benefits changes are having a real impact on local people.
“Increasing numbers of people simply don’t have enough money to feed themselves and their families.”
Doncaster foodbank aims to help people through short term crisis by providing three days’ supply of emergency food.
The foodbank will also provide support and signposting to help combat longer term problems.
Donations can include tinned food, rice, pasta, teabags, sugar, jam, biscuits, pasta sauces and UHT milk.
