Cabinet members on Doncaster Council heard there 4,000 known carers in the borough but the figure could be as high as 33,000.

The 'Doncaster All Age Carers' Charter' and resulting campaign will hope to increase carer awareness by aiming to increase the number of carers self-identifying through a carer workforce.

The plan also aims to give a platform to celebrate carers in Doncaster and help reduce stigma and isolation.

Nationally, carers provide  around £130 billion of health and social care support each year, equating to the cost of NHS budget for the same period.

Deputy Mayor Glyn Jones said: 'Carers are part of our society '“ many of them are unrecognised, unknown and some of them don't even realise this themselves.

They perform there caring duties without thought or regard to their own wellbeing in many cases.

This charter will certainly help formalise some arrangement because if we didn't have these carers doing what they're doing it would cost the state a massive amount of money.

Mayor Ros Jones added: 'Looking at all this it's raising the profile of carers and what is available.

'We all know carers out there save the state billions of pounds of money but they add to the quality of life to the individuals they encounter.'

The charter will be officially launched on November 30.Â
