New back-up emergency generator at Doncaster Royal Infirmary to handle power cuts

The generator will help to power the hospital through potential future developments and in the event of a power outage.

Just over 12 months ago, in November 2017, DRI had to switch to an emergency generator after the site was struck by a power cut.

The power was cut to a small section of the hospital site, with a back-up generator kicking-in moments later to restore electricity and light. The problem was caused by a fault with a circuit breaker within some of its services.

DRI's new generator has been installed at the Women's Hospital building, as part of a multi-million pound electrical infrastructure project that is currently underway at the hospital. The Trust is investing in the extensive upgrade in order to increase the electrical capacity of the hospital by 70 percent, which will also help with future developments across the site.

The new generator was switched on by chairman of the Hospital Trust, Suzy Brain England, OBE.

Director of Estates and Facilities at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, Dr Kirsty Edmondson Jones, said: 'Investing in the core electrical infrastructure at Doncaster Royal Infirmary means that the Trust will be in a strong position to develop services if needed in the future, ensuring that we continue to meet the care needs of local people, whilst maintaining high standards in the best possible environment.'

Having unveiled the new DRI generator, the Trust is already well under way with the next phase of the project.

Visitors to the hospital throughout autumn may have noticed that construction work has taken place on a new high voltage substation. The new sub station will house a new mains incoming power supply and also house new high voltage equipment. It is hoped that the additional power created by the new generator will enable the Trust to realise its plans to construct a new CT suite in Doncaster.
