My View, Margaret Herbert: Build us a multi-storey hospital car park

This is especially the case when a close relative or friend has an accident or is seriously ill and relatives cannot find anywhere to park nearby.

Allow me to make a suggestion.

Perhaps the dreadful – looking flat buildings, namely Lister Court, occupied by the hospital staff, could be demolished and a multi-storey car park could be built in their place in a sympathetic design to the area.

Alternative accommodation could be found locally, possibly in the new flats being built just across the road from the hospital.

I think a multi-storey car park is something which would pay for itself within a short period of time.

I feel sure that residents in the area would much rather have a multi-storey car park than have people parking in front of their homes all the time.

The parking seems to extend further every day, both on Thorne Road and Armthorpe Road.

There are park and ride services available but very few people seem to be aware of this and it only operates in certain areas.

Notices in the local press about this service would be useful.

Parking in general over here in Doncaster is cheap compared with other areas in the region, such as Leeds.

However, with the demise of the market and retail trade, and also what I believe to be the bad lack of public transport, improvements to parking could be the answer to encouraging shoppers back to our town.

Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays have always been the market days in Doncaster town centre.

And I think that reducing the parking charges to £1 for three hours on those days would encourage customers to come back.

I find that I dare not buy frozen goods in town now because I have to wait so long for a bus back home.

There seems to have been problems with punctuality.

That has been particularly bad on Fridays and Saturdays, when I find that buses just do not turn up.

Last week I found myself having to wait for over half an hour at the bus stop on Cleveland Street.

I was not the only one. I was there along with older people who were carrying large bags of shopping.

Also waiting there with me were mothers with babies who wanted feeding.

I think the people in charge of parking need to look at the situation.

I would certainly recommend that some of the traffic wardens have a more flexible approach to drivers in general.
