MP named as South Yorkshire football football club's new patron

Earlier this month, Mr Dugher met with Club Chairman Peter Schofield and Manager Ian Shirt, before watching the club’s match against Eccleshill United.

Worsbrough Bridge lost the match 3-2, but Mr Dugher was still optimistic.

“ As a big football fan, I was delighted to be asked to get involved with Worsbrough Bridge FC.

“The side may be struggling a little on the field, but from what I’ve seen they have some really good players and been a bit unlucky of late.

“The Club have made a number of changes off the field that should bring about some much needed stability. I have been incredibly impressed by all those now involved in the Club, especially by their commitment to our community and their plans for the future.

“I’m looking forward to making a contribution and helping them in whatever way I can.

“I am also the proud patron of many local organisations like the dementia charity BIADS, Elsecar Heritage Railway, Worsbrough Brass Band and the Live in Barnsley festival.”

Worsbrough Bridge has been through a tumultuous year with several setbacks. After a 92-year stay at Park Road Stadium in Worsbrough, the club had to move grounds last October.

They played their first game back on their home ground of Park Road Stadium on February 13.

After a tough year, Worsbrough Bridge FC is now looking forward to the future. The club has recently announced some ambitious new plans to strengthen its ties with the local community.

Examples include the expansion of the current Junior offer and the creation of a free football academy for young local talent.

The club also plans to offer work experience opportunities to young people from next season onwards, and Mr Dugher looks forward to supporting the club in his new role as patron.
