Motorists and parents urged to keep South Yorkshire children safe

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is using Child Safety Week, from June 1-7, to encourage everyone to do their bit to held children avoid accidents.

This year the focus of the campaign is ‘teatime terrors’ with parents warned that it is a time of day when accidents can happen as children make their way home from school and play out at home.

The Safer Roads Partnership is reminding parents that they play a crucial role in their child’s road safety awareness and they can teach them to walk on the side of the pavement away from traffic, to always finding a safe place to cross and to find safe places to play away from traffic.

Joanne Wehrle, Interim Safer Roads Partnership Manager, said: “During Child Safety Week we are asking parents to lead by example to support their child’s safety and development.

“Remember, you are your child’s best teacher. However, we all have a responsibility to look out for children on the roads and to help keep them safe.”

Motorists are also being urged to play their part in keeping children safe by looking out for children, particularly at school opening and closing times.

They are also urged to park considerately, especially outside schools.

To support Child Safety Week the Safer Roads Partnership team will be handing out safety messages on St Sepulchre Gate in Doncaster town centre on June 1; Playmania, Elsecar, on June 2; Mothercare at Parkgate on June 3; Treasure Island at Hellaby on June 4 and Mothercare at Crystal Peaks on June 5.
