A motorist drove off over Doncaster farmland to avoid capture by an off-duty police officer.

Humberside Police said an off-duty officer started following a Land Rover, which was towing a trailer, along the M18 in the early hours of yesterday.

The Land Rover pulled into the M18 Services at Doncaster and then drove off over farmland.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "An off-duty officer was following a suspicious looking Land Rover pulling a trailer when it left the road over farmland at the M18 Services at 12.48am.

"The vehicle has not been located since the incident."
