More smoke expected as firefighters tackle Rotherham recycling centre blaze today

Residents in Rotherham are being warned to expect more smoke today as firefighters continue to tackle a blaze at a recycling centre.

The fire broke out at Universal Recycling, Wharf Road, Kilnhurst, at 10am yesterday and crews worked through the night to extinguish the flames.

But the fire is still burning this morning and crews expect to remain there for most of today.

Residents are being urged to keep their doors and windows closed and to stay away from the area if possible.

The blaze involves 500 tonnes of baled plastic.

The cause is not yet known.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Our crews have worked hard through the night to tackle the Kilnhurst fire.

"It is under control, but we expect to be there most of the day."
