Doncaster MP Ed Miliband says he is going to stay out of the debate over his successor as Labour leader

Mr Miliband has ruled out speculation that he would be the next Labour figurehead to speak out about the party’s leadership election race.

A spokesman for Mr Miliband said the Doncaster North MP would not be intervening in this contest as he has said right from the start.

“He is following established precedent and believes that the debate must play out between the candidates,” added the spokesman.

More than 600,000 Labour members, affiliates and registered supporters start to receive their ballot papers today, following a surge in party membership after the election.

As many as 165,000 people signed up to vote in the party’s leadership elections on the last day of registration.
