Opposition leader Ed Miliband has praised the work of a church organisation helping people survive the recession.
One Heart One Voice, made up of representatives from churches from across Doncaster borough, is involved in setting up food banks and organising money advice sessions in churches around Doncaster.
The group also supports the work of ‘Street Pastors’, available to members of the public in the town centre on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The MP for Doncaster North heard about the group’s work, which includes support for children and families and chaplaincy services, at the meeting held in his constituency office.
He said: “Churches act both as an early warning system and as a last resort, and that is why they are so important.
“I applaud them for the part they play in helping to support people in our communities.
“The initiatives set up by the church here in Doncaster are run largely by volunteers with local knowledge, which helps to ensure that help is targeted in the most effective way possible.”
Rev Ian Rutherford, of Doncaster Methodist Circuit, said: “As a network of churches we are keen to engage with our civic authorities.
“We are very grateful for the opportunity to discuss with Mr Miliband how we might best support him and the other local MPs, the Mayor and the council in identifying and helping to address the most pressing needs and issues facing Doncaster.”
