Mexborough pupils’ First World War Centenary tributes

Schools in Mexborough are to link together to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Pupils from six of the town’s schools will pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service, at a July 16 service in the the centre of Mexborough.

They will read First World War poems, sings wartime songs and read out the names of Mexborough servicemen who died as a result of the conflict. The Mexborough School Band will also attend.

The event is in conjunction with Mexborough and District Heritage Society,

Society Chair, and a governor at Doncaster Road School, Margaret Roper, said: “It is to their great credit that under the direction of Tom Purdy, the schols have got together to arrange this presentation. We hope the people of Mexborough will appreciate and be proud of their efforts.”

Bill Lawrence of the Mexborough and District Heritage Society said: “What better way to commemmorate the part played by the people of Mexborough when the tribute is led by the great-grandchildren of those who gave their lives nearly a century ago.”

The event will be at 9.45am in the market place, with the Royal British Legion also in attendance.
